I slept hard but not well that night. My plan was desperate, a last resort, and there were so many ways for it to blow up in my face. What if Arcuro learned I’d also met with Aidan? What if he learned I didn’t have an alliance with Satine and that she was epically pissed at me? What if he decided not to walk into what he perceived was a trap?

Surprisingly, the last question seemed less likely to happen. Arcuro was powerful and arrogant. He would just love the idea that he knew my plan—that he knew Satine’s plan. He would show up to gloat and to take her out himself. As long as he didn’t learn the truth, it wouldn’t occur to him that I’d take advantage of the situation. I was a human, a Rain. My family never played these manipulation games. We never bluffed.

I was still hoping an alternative plan would drop out of the sky, but until that happened, I’d do what I could to make this one work. That started with obtaining the dampening spell, so when Astrid startled me awake with a phone call at six a.m., I wasn’t upset. The Fire Mage, a truly ridiculous alias, had agreed to meet late in the afternoon.

Step One accomplished. Now I just needed to make sure Step Two didn’t crash and burn. If this was a setup, I needed someone to watch my back, someone who was capable of taking out an angry witch.

Blake had changed his mind about using me as bait. I was confident I could make him change his mind back.

It was a terrible idea to wake a wolf early, especially after a full moon, so I killed a few hours before I made the drive to Blake’s place. Unfortunately, the two-story farmhouse wasn’t as empty as the previous times I’d been there this year. Six cars were parked to either side of the gravel driveway.

Frowning, I pulled in beside Raj’s shiny black BMW. Blake had purchased the house from Nora a few months ago. Before Nora inherited it from her dad, it had been the pack’s headquarters. Lehr had moved the HQ to another residence deeper in the mountains, and Nora had made this her personal home. Maybe it was a rebellion against her dad or the fact that she was a naturally born werewolf instead of a bitten human, but she’d always had an independent streak, and she hadn’t allowed packmates to crash at her place. Blake, obviously, didn’t have the same proclivity to push people away.

Damn. I hadn’t wanted an audience for this conversation. Looked like I didn’t have a choice.

Bracing myself for the werewolves’ magic, I shut off the engine and opened my door. I kept my head held high as I made my way toward the front door. Vampires could sense human auras. Werewolves could smell them, and I was pretty sure the window to the left of the door was cracked open. They likely knew I was here.
